In a previous article, I explained how to better use Google Analytics to track browser usage on a site. Adjusting your browser strategy by looking at stats and trends is great, however when designing a new site, how to decide which browsers to target? The only reference is the global stats of the browser market shares, which are more or less reliable ( the “Usage share of web browsers” article on Wikipedia is a good sum-up of the sources). However, global stats may not represent the audience you are targeting for your new site. I.E: If your audience is techy, then it is likely Firefox or Chrome will have higher percentages than a mainstream site. Also, if you want to go global, you should study the various habits per country, as browser usage can really vary from one country to another.
As Kelkoo operates in 10 European countries and is a mainstream site, I find it useful to share the browser usage for each country, including a global representation at European level (based on traffic addition from all countries).
Some observations:
- In all countries, Firefox 3.5/3.6, Internet Explorer 8.0 and Internet Explorer 7.0 are in the top3. Those four browsers represent 77% of market share at European level: a no-brainer to develop any site.
- Germany is pretty unusual with 43% of market share for Firefox (3.x, 3.5.x and 3.6.x).
- Internet Explorer 6.0 ranges from 3.9% in Norway to 11.1% in Spain, with 7.38% share at European level. That’s a real dilemna: the percentage in some countries becomes low enough to not justify to support this browser anymore, still more than 10% usage in some markets is pretty important…
