Miscellaneous news on social shopping and shopping engines (2007-03-26)

  • Big news on the blogosphere this week: Google is testing CPA – cost-per-action - (also called PPA – pay per action) on AdWords. In case of you didn’t read anything about it yet, here is the official announcement on Google blog, and an analysis of this move by TechCrunch.
    • To follow up the discussion on CPA, here is an interesting article on Retrevo blog, published a few weeks ago (before the announcement from Google), Is Cost-Per-Action Good for Consumers?
    • On Fred Cavazza’s blog (french blog), you will find a comparison between CPM, CPC and CPA models: CPM-CPC-CPA, lequel choisir ? (French readers, please have a look at the comments, maybe more interesting than the article itself).
    • I wonder the impact CPA could have on shopping engines that mostly rely on CPC. CPA in the shopping world = purchase done on merchant website after a click from a shopping engine = need for reliable conversion tracking tools to track purchases (provided by 3rd parties or internal for each shopping engine) = merchants that have the technical skills to implement such tracking tools ?.
  • In his List of Online Social Networking Sites, Justin Garrity identified 10 social shopping sites (out of 110 social networks):
    • All the big ones are mentioned (Kaboodle, CrowdStorm, ThisNext…)
    • Thanks to this list, I discovered Freecycle, very interesting concept and quite old (launched in 2003!):

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns.

    • And also Hawkee:

Hawkee is a social network that focuses on social software and social shopping. Our members are active developers and consumers who share a fond interest in technology. From video games to PHP scripting we cover a variety of topics for the technically inclined. Users can share code snippets, product reviews, comments, screenshots, photos and downloads in order to gain valuable feedback from friends in their network.

  • Justin could now add ShopReflex, a new comer in the social shopping world, that has just been launched in France (See review on Mashable France).
